EQUIVALENCE POLICY & PROCEDURE

THE SFA EQUIVALENCE POLICY

The SFA Equivalence Policy & Procedure defines how the SFA recognises other credible assurance and certification systems. By identifying where standards align in purpose and performance, the procedure supports consistency, reduces duplication, and strengthens collaboration across the global sustainable animal fibre supply chain.

RECOGNISING OTHER STANDARDS WITH CONFIDENCE

The SFA Equivalence Policy & Procedure v1.0, published on 29 October 2025, outlines how the SFA assesses other standards systems to determine whether they are partially or fully equivalent to the SFA Standards System. This process aims to allow products certified under recognised systems to be claimed as ‘SFA Certified’ – ensuring continued trust in the integrity and credibility of the SFA-certified logo.

WHY EQUIVALENCE MATTERS

The procedure aims to help create a more efficient and aligned certification landscape by:

  • Reducing duplication of audits and certification efforts
  • Building mutual recognition between credible assurance systems
  • Promoting transparency and collaboration across the fibre sector

MAINTAINING INTEGRITY & TRANSPARENCY

Equivalence determinations are made following the SFA’s governance procedures, SFA Standard Setting Procedure and are reviewed by the SFA Standard Setting Improvement Committee. Any recognised equivalences will be published publicly by the SFA, and changes to either system will trigger a review to ensure continued alignment.
